I’m not someone that cleanses or banishes before and after all my rituals. In fact, I quite like the atmosphere of a little chaos that comes from not holding them. But, they are indeed important.
Some rituals, in my life, prosper greatly from the effects of my opening temple, however briefly. It can be through inviting wayward shades and solemn vampires that curses are elevated, just as it can be through banishing them that “order” or the normal state or temple is restored.
It’s mostly in those times, after having “strangers,” whether human friends or spirit strangers, over that I put my efforts towards cleansing and banishing. Other than that, before big rituals and when temple starts feeling “sticky,” or like the air isn’t flowing right, I hold cleansing and banishing type rituals.
Outside of ritual though, these types of rituals also have an important role to play in daily life. When I was younger I used to repeat a certain phrase every time I woke up, it served to banish contrary thoughts, feelings, and energy from my space. And as the days added up, the effects really began to settle in. Since then, I’ve stopped using that phrase, but strive to incorporate another and bring other energies into my life.
In my workings for clients, things like personal energy and personal space come up mostly. Usually, these are related to “attachments,” whether they be with other people or less tangible entities. Least often, there are issues with possession. Typically, my process for cleansing and banishing rituals includes listening to what is happening, the actual effects. And, next, a divination to see if there has been magick involved in the situation, if that’s a concern. The unbinding, banishing, and cleansing comes next. Let’s talk a little about the difference between these words first. Here’s the distinction I make:
Unbindings, first and foremost are between 2 or more people. This is what happens when you’re very close to someone, and it’s fixed through drawing their energy, however much of it you keep around, away.
Banishings are to banish an entity or a specific energy that has been lingering from your space. If you feel watched, or uncomfortable in your own space, banishing are usually a good step.
Cleansings are much the same to banishings, except usually a bit less targeted and focused more on surrounding energy than things like people, entities, and the like.
Banishing
Banishings are very important, especially when we feel there’s something wrong in our world. My banishings typically focus on third-party involvement, as they tend to be most often relevant when someone is facing a persistent entity.
Sometimes, succubi/incubi other times vampires, parasites, imposter spirits, and the like. Much more rarely, targeted annoyances from magick practitioners. Usually, people become interested in services when their problems begin repeating themselves, but I encourage people not to let these problems get too far. Their effects, even after the original issue has been dealt with, can be longer-lasting sometimes if they’re allowed to linger too long.
The way I handle these situations relies on clients’ understanding of events: what they’re seeing in their lives that leads them to believe there’s a problem, what problem(s) that make(s) for them, and divination. Once those have been handled, although often those conversations aren’t one and done, my methods vary depending on the situation at hand.
Astral methods of banishing are sometimes used, other times evocation, and in other circumstances spirits. The choice to use one of these methods (or potentially another suggested to me by spirits I’m close with) or a combination of them is at my discretion. This is because while all effective, they do not all work the same in different situations and I strive to tailor all my workings to clients’ individual needs.
Cleansing
Cleansings are also wonderfully important rituals! I find they work best when scheduled or used in non-immediately problematic situations, but I’ve certainly used them in those times. I try to use cleansings as more general rituals. Personally, I often include washing down altar(s), floors, and other trinkets in temple during my cleansings. Incense is usually a party to these rituals, and sunlight or darkness is a toss up.
What I offer to my clients in terms of cleansing is not quite what I’ve listed above. Instead, it often consists of divination in the form of tarot, speaking with spirits, and astral “scans.” Rituals are then held to cleanse a client’s direct energy and the energy that surrounds them.
Unbinding
Let’s begin with a story I’m at this point slightly accustomed to sharing. Once, several years ago, I made a decision that I wanted to be bound to someone in real depth. I wanted to know what was on his mind, how he was feeling, if he was unwell. It began because he was sick and I was considering alternatives to my standard practice in similar situations.
I thought I could figure out a way to move illness between people, for another day, and I stumbled into binding. For months, over a year, I felt him like he was etched into my body alongside me. That was my first real lesson in distinguishing my feelings from other people’s, even when I could feel them both. I learned what it’s like to be sad and not know how to even touch it because it’s not mine, and I learned how fire bright pain in my ankle meant his was probably feeling the aftereffects of something.
And then came the day that I wanted my life cleansed of that binding. And from then on, it took about three months of active work to finish the unbinding. And years later, pesky memories began coming up at obnoxious times. So I turned, as I often do, to Dantalion who asked what I wanted and then made them disappear.
