Familiars aren’t always necessary, but they sure make magick more exciting!
Personally, I’ve both been offered and found familiars. I find them incredibly valuable. Familiars can add many things to our workings. These can include protection to ourselves and those we tell them are important to us, increased efficiency of tasks, and learning from them, among others.
Unfortunately, I’m less willing to talk about my familiars that I am other aspects of my craft, so this is mostly about the rituals I offer on the topic. In terms of types of spirits or beings that are often found as familiars, I’m most familiar with jinn, “lesser” demons, shades, and vampires in this role. I am less familiar with elemental spirits as familiars, but know they can be kept that way. However, because I am less knowledgeable on the topic in theory and in practice, I do not offer those types of spirits, unless they are granted by a spirit without my prompting.
What do my familiar rituals look like?
In the first case, I call a spirit I’m on good terms with and make a request for a familiar on the client’s behalf. The spirit and I converse about the familiar and I receive a name and sigil, along with any other relevant details. All of these, as in all cases of familiar rituals, are conveyed to the client.
In the second case, where the client is able to choose what type of familiar they want and/or what purpose it will primarily serve in their life, I would likely similarly hold a ritual with a spirit I’m on good terms with a find a familiar that is aligned with the client’s goals. In a more unlikely situation, sometimes I encounter spirits on my walk and they become familiars when suited to the role. Name of the spirit and method of communication (like a sigil) are provided to the client.
In all cases, as mentioned on the Ritual for Hire page, clients are responsible for the upkeep of their familiars. This means, you are responsible for offerings, communication, and all else that is required of the relationship on an ongoing basis.
