Spirits, Books & Learning Magick

Just a bit on how I learned magick & my views on learning it

When I set my heart on learning magick,

I had no idea what I was getting into. I had turned away from a religion that meant the world to me because I was denied something I felt was immeasurably important, that I hadn’t done anything so wrong it should be reasonably withheld.

I was eleven or ten or six or…kneeling at the bedside praying, reading books on dogma I didn’t understand, writing poems convincing myself that lying wasn’t the same as breathing, begging a god who was always looking the other way for calm.

When I began learning magick,

it wasn’t through a lens of “magick,” or even “magic.” It was books that put manipulation at their center. Understanding, or trying to, the principles behind manipulative tactics in interpersonal interactions. I read a bit on hypnosis too, but it never grabbed me. It was learning to control the self, and how that extended to others that most moved me. Related I’m sure, was how deeply I valued being able to convincingly lie for a while.

I wanted to learn astral projection. I wanted to learn how to fly, and how to move energy in intense (fiction-focused) ways. I wanted to be a “witch” more than I wanted to hold onto a religion that had scorned me for existing, that had kept me bound in the throws of fear for so long.

It wasn’t through books or spirits. It was in stillness. It was the quiet between the loudness of breath, speech, and movement. It was counting the heartbeats that sped and slowed in fear and calm. It was the fear of shadows loitering overhead and the plunge into the dark.

The first four years of my practice, because by then I was actively and intentionally practicing magick, were sans spirits and sans occult guidebooks. I read a little on spirituality, and definitely on philosophy, quite a bit on myths as well. But that’s because I was (and am) interested in those things, not because I was seeking a certain path or didn’t know where to go.

Of course, it can’t really be said that I did know where I was going, and I’m not sure I can say for sure now that I know where this path winds through but I wasn’t lost. I was limited in materials then too, trying to make my way through manifesting and energy work, trying to understand what would become, and was even then and even before, the foundations of my craft. Which is not only the foundation of my craft, but also so much of who I am, these things are impossibly intertwined (as they should be).

If at eleven I decided to list my grievances of the bible, at fourteen I wondered about atheism, and at sixteen began reading on spirits. There was overlap, between the demon-summoning and begging, desperate, prayers and worship to the god I had revered for years prior. In this time, most of my focus was on energy work and meditation.

The first magick I actively participated in was important to me, it was empowering and in many ways intense. But it was nothing like calling a spirit into my space, like being a conduit for it, or hearing the energy roar and quiet into a calm overwhelming.

The first spirit I set out to call intentionally and did call into a ritual was Dantalion. And among the careful moments of that ritual I’d planned and cautiously executed, I was thrown into another world. One where spirits exist not in a void or vacuum, but as welcomed through us into our world just as we exist through them as part of theirs.

For years, I relied on Dantalion’s teachings primarily to guide me through this craft and practice. So much at the beginning, as had been the case before reaching out to him, was feeling adrift as though there was so much in the mundane and magic worlds both that I had no answers for. I was forbidden from reading certain (many) texts in these years as well. Something that has gotten mixed results when I’ve told others (mostly, though, disbelief, doubt, and scorn).

But why bother to practice in a way that is not ours, mine? How can someone else’s beliefs or removed judgements on my path be more important to me than mine?

Several years into my practice, then, I began discussing with others on similar walks about their paths, about our shared experiences, the types of magick we enjoyed–or even begrudgingly partook of–that resonated. And not even then did I begin to pick my way though occult books, not long revered authors’ words and not contemporary views or guides.

It has long been, for me, reliance on myself, on spirits I’ve welcomed in, and those people around me who have offered stories passed that has brought my magick to life. It was much more recently that I began to contemplate the works of others who have walked this and similar paths before me.

I believe people should not frequent tables to which they have brought nothing.

For that reason, I believe it is crucial for people to form their own views, opinions, and more often than not collect their own experiences before sitting down to learn of others. I, of course, as someone who loves literature, reading, and understanding others’ perspectives, advocate dearly for consuming knowledge and learning from others. However, how can we ever hope to be in conversation with a text–or its author–if we do not have anything with which to converse?

Blind consumption of others’ stories, and acceptance of them ought be reserved for people we trust blindly.

People like to ask how to get started with magick, which books people have read, which resources they have seen, which rituals are the most powerful, which spirits the quickest, what is “the best”? These questions are entirely contrary to what and how I have learned, which is to learn first through the self.

To understand what compels you in the mundane world, what brings you closer to the magical. These are the things which should be exalted as a path into the magical is lit. Even in teachings that seek to standardize avenues of learning and texts consumed, anyone successful understands that people are not all the same and thus cannot all grow when treated as if the external is the only thing which matters, is a catalyst for growth, or otherwise should inform how learning is conducted.

Understanding of the self, however fleeting it may be, is a greater key to your magick and a likely path, than any number of spirits or books can provide. There are many ways to know yourself, at least to dip your feet into the pool of knowledge (of self and others), my suggestion to anyone who wants to learn magick would always be to start with the self.

What has brought you to this path, and when shed, what remains of yourself to follow deeper into it?

King Paimon: Renowned Manipulator and Day Spirit

Formalities

King Paimon is an entity featured in the Lemegaton’s Ars Goetia, or the Lesser Key of Solomon. There are a few (widely spread and at times documented) theories about King Paimon including that he is King of the Djinn, likes to be addressed as “King,” and that he appears with a notable entrance. He is a spirit that is well suited to aiding practitioners in legal matters, manipulation, learning secrets in these fields, and better understanding magick itself. The stronger your relationship with King Paimon is, the more likely to understand his many sides and instruction you will be. King Paimon is a trustworthy spirit who works efficiently, oftentimes behind the scenes, and speaks with candor.

Alcohol is a good standard offering, in the times I have worked with King Paimon, he has expressed an interest in tequila. Aside from alcohol, many other offerings are accepted. Frankincense is an incense associated and offered to him, and fruits are common offerings as well. Dedicated objects might also make for good offerings.

King Paimon should be called up with respect, reason, and an openness to hear what he has to say about the matter at hand. It is suggested that Kings (of the Goetia) are called while standing–a lesson I learned well from another King. King Paimon should also be called on Sunday, during the daytime hours, and while facing the West. As he is associated with the Sun, yellow is a color of significance. His element is water. And finally, his enn is Linan tasa jedan Paimon.

King Paimon & I

King Paimon is a spirit I have met on a few occasions. Due to the nature of our arrangements though, I won’t be saying much about them. Most of the times that I have called on him for help, it was related to legal matters. These have been regarding travel, court issues, and more. He is a spirit that I have asked to resolve both my own personal matters, and those of others. Additionally, he was a prominent spirit in a group I was participated in which led us to be closer and during that time to have a relationship that was not only founded on result-based magick.

King Paimon does not usually deliver results for me as quickly as perhaps other results come, but I do often have tall asks of him. He is not a spirit that “drops by” frequently. Outside of rituals where I call him, he has only appeared in one other ritual of mine where he stayed and conversed on a private topic with me and the spirit who I was calling at the time. That said, I do believe he has been graciously helpful to me even when I have not explicitly requested his aid.

Although I do not have any type of casual relationship with King Paimon, at a more formal level we get along well and he is a spirit that I would recommend to almost anyone looking for guidance or help in an area he is associated with. He has always treated me with respect, sincerity, and honesty. He has never been threatening, and appears to have a very logical method to both his words and his work.

King Paimon’s Appearance & Specialties

Appearance & Energy

King Paimon appears most often to me as dressed in full royal attire. I have seen the camel once, I have felt and seen him accompanied by others a couple of times. In mediation, I often see a desert scape and sunset colors. His appearance is very beautiful and I have never seen him look anything close to frightening or monstrous, instead he looks pretty human to me with an ethereal beauty. When I see him, I see long hair, light eyes (though I could not say whether golden, brown, blue, green, or other), and fine, delicate features.

I have routinely heard things including an unexplained thunder-like sound and bells accompany him. The first time we met, especially, I remember a boom and a flickering of light although it was sunny out, there were no storms anywhere nearby, and the lights were off. Nothing fell, no objects were moved. I really have no idea what happened but he came with flare. Since then, I’ve had similar but to a lesser degree experiences calling him. His energy can be a little bit overpowering, but is not suffocating or remotely scary in the least. He arrives in my space with a very clean air, and a feeling of dignity.

Specialties

While there is little King Paimon cannot help with, there are certain offices that he specializes in. These are what he is usually called for by people who are not intricately familiar with him, and people who have long established relationships with him alike. These several areas King Paimon specializes in include the mind, finding and revealing secrets, and teaching “arts & sciences.”

In my experience, King Paimon works efficiently and without delay. It is important to remember, though, that requests that are complex in nature might take longer to complete than other types of requests. I have never had issues result from working with King Paimon; he is clear, friendly, and very helpful. Aside from those items listed above, if you are comfortable working with him, you might want to ask what other types of requests he can fulfil.

Buer: The Healing God

Buer, blessed healer and teacher,
Commander of 50 legions of spirits,

President in the right of your power
Represented by swift and lovely quicksilver

You are teacher among philosophers and herbalists
You alone heal the ails of humanity dampened
By the pains manifested from within.

The beauty your light shines on the weak of body
The frail of spirit is tremendous.

You, blessed healer and teacher of morality, nature, logic
And you, Buer who enlightens us on healing first ourselves before others

Bring calming peace of joy, soul and heart
With your chilling presence. You let love trickle down
The soul until righteousness grasps at vain suffering.

There is no trembling before your power, but rather
Harmony in your sights befall the meek.

Your gracious kindness reaches beyond bounds.
Your strength of character creates a home for restless souls.

I give to you my humble thanks.
Powerful are we who trust in your healing hands of wisdom.
Buer, daemon and kindred spirit, thank you for your healing presence.

Formalities

Buer is a healing entitiy who appears in the Lemegaton’s Ars Goetia. This text is also know as the Lesser Key of Solomon. Some say his origins are Germanic, others say Solomon was the first to speak of him, and others give entirely different accounts of his origins. Although Buer is often referred to as a “demon,” I am among those who believe him to be a god. An infernal god, perhaps, but this entity is god-level in power and ability and nothing less in my experience.

While Buer can be called with Solomonic methods and is unlikely to rebel if they are used, other methods work perfectly well. Sitting down and saying his enn a few times while gazing into and opening his sigil are likely the easiest ways of making contact. Buer is a spirit that typically delivers quickly–within days. And he is very true to the magician in terms of the services he is willing to provide. Buer is a spirit I have found will not violate nature though. With regard to offerings, time and commitment to a healing path seems to be something that Buer appreciates. If you can take some time to focus on healing yourself, another, or learning some healing (basics or advanced work) that will be greatly valued.

Let’s run through some common associations, but remember these are not set in stone preferences. As a president, his metal is mercury. Buer is also most often associated with orange (I’ve found green is a good substitute as it represents nature and healing), Storax incense (other woody scents are the best substitutes though some more than others), the planet Mercury, and the element fire. Lastly, Buer’s enn: Erato on ca Buer anon.

Buer & I

The first time I met Buer it was dawn, as he is a day daemon. I was sitting calmly on the floor facing South, and waiting for him to arrive as I gazed into his drawn sigil and said his enn. I had with me a picture of the human I wanted healed as well. He appeared all at once after making me wait a little while.

Icy coldness like a knife was the first feeling and the most intense that I encountered in my ritual. It began at the base of my neck and carved like a claw down my back outlining my shoulder blade. I looked back and felt a being other than myself but looked forward again and let the ice-touch continue uninterrupted. He told me to remove my necklace (one I’d gotten years earlier with the inverted pentagram and “Baphomet”). And he told me to state my business with him. He was formal and a bit intense, but never unkind. He did, however, refuse to work with another spirit which I believe was because they have drastically different personalities in that Buer is purely a healer.

He promised to begin the work nearly immediately and to have it finished with in short order. This ritual was one without incense, candles, or any of those things. As such, I when I asked what I could offer he said it wasn’t necessary but he would be pleased with my time. So for a week after I spent about 15 minutes a day practicing a minimalist healing rite on the target.

The target later told me that he had indeed felt something knifelike trace along his leg late that first night. He had been ignoring the pain for months and had a serious issue that affected his back, leg, ankle, and foot. Although spirits often present themselves in different ways to different people, it is pretty common for us to have similar experiences as well. This is true even for people who don’t practice magick, like this particular target. Beginning the next morning (Buer and I had discussed that his most intense healing occur over a three day period), he felt a change. Following this, I know that the target did not have more leg pain for months. He has not, to my knowledge, had a single issue with the leg at large despite medical advice that the pain would never completely fade and that there was a chance at probable indefinite discomfort and potentially worsening pain/condition.

Buer is one of my favorite spirits to work with because of the healing that he has brought to me and those I care for. He works quickly and is extremely helpful in the healing process whether it has been begun already or not. Before I called on him, I was concerned for this man’s ability to walk, to live without chronic physical pain. But Buer showed me there are other paths in life. Paths that bring about and foster healing. Over the last few years, I have worked with Buer several times in order to aid the wellbeing of a few people. His work is nothing short of amazing and to any who are interested in learning healing, being healed, or helping others heal I recommend calling upon Buer for guidance and delivery from whatever ailment might be the issue.

I have had one other experience that I would like to mention here. It was not my most recent encounter with Buer, but I believe it is an important one to share. This is “The Hierophant” written of in Knowing Before Death Knocks that Buer refused to heal. He said he would not undermine a person’s natural time of death and gave condolences as he told me healing was not always the answer, especially when someone was ready. Buer stayed with me late that night and informed me of the man’s passing. In the morning I received the official news. Buer has helped me heal many times and been an amazing teacher in the craft, but there are times the practitioner may not be able to have their way.

Buer has been an outstanding spiritual guide, friend, and teacher to me as he has been to many others. I was not very new when I began working with him, but I would recommend him to any practitioner in need of a little –or a lot of– health. He may refuse if the target is unwilling to stop actively making their problem worse or death has come knocking, but it’s much more likely that Buer will become a trusted spirit and healer.

Buer’s Appearance & Specialties

Appearance & Energy

Although I have not yet seen Buer appear before me in a complete and “concrete” way, I have felt his energy very deeply many times. When I have seen Buer, I see a yellow-orange light and the face of a lion. He has never before put on an intimidating or scary face for me and never appeared with loud noise as some other spirits do.

The energy that Buer appears to me with is cold and crisp. It’s as though the warmth leaves all the air around me and I feel his cold touch, almost like claws at times, touching me or piercing into my energy. This feeling is never particularly painful though, just a suggestion of an energy shift and a tangible touch.

Buer is usually calm and has a focused energy when he comes. It is often that I can tell where, around me, he is stationed. He likes to come and wait behind me for a few moments before moving to be in front of me. Of course, if you use a triangle in your practice this likely will not be the case for you.

Buer is said to regularly appear with a lion’s head (and mane) and moves in a circular fashion on cloven feet. Buer is a loyal spirit and it is unlikely he would ever try to deceive a magician. I have had one ritual that was interrupted by another spirit and had to banish, Buer was very gracious with me and returned when I called him moments later with his calm, present, and healing energy. Expect him to do his best in all workings because that is the type of spirit he is and his energy tells as much.

Specialties

Buer is a healing god. He heals all types of people and all types of afflictions. He works quickly and remarkably. The one thing that should never be asked of Buer is baneful workings. As healing is his office I would like to highlight this means especially baneful work that cause illness and/or death.

In my experience, Buer will not break the laws of nature to heal a person, but he will within their constraints and within his own morals save lives and heal afflictions of any person in need. What this means if that if someone is slated for death, he will not go against this fate to heal them and bring them back into good life-saving health. In some cases, if a person does not want to be healed or continuously refuses to work toward lessening their own pain he will refuse them aid. An example would be a smoker that everyday chooses, without even feeling the need, to smoke more than the day before despite Buer’s aid.

Especially with healing magick, it’s important to remember humans are humans and our bodies have specific parameters they function within.

In the vast majority of cases Buer is called for, healing can be expected to begin with 24 hours. Depending on the ailment he’s being called about, it can take longer for the full effects to settle down. For example, if he is being called to ask for help with an addiction, it may take longer than a week or two. If he is being called to help with diet management (eating more, less, or simply more balanced) it may take weeks for the person to fall into better habits. If he is being called for mental health it is important to let this take its time because going from one mental extreme to the other is not healthy for anyone. And if he is being called for other bodily injuries, like a broken leg or a blood clot among others, expect him to speed up the healing and keep pain relatively low but not to fix the issue completely within a couple days, although he may in some cases do just that. Especially with healing magick, it’ important to remember humans are humans and our bodies have specific parameters they function within.

Buer can also be called to aid in energy workings. This is a really amazing use of his talents and energy. The healing also usually occurs quicker when a practiced (energy) healer is directing their “own” energy. Buer is a spirit that values a practitioner’s commitment to their craft and their goals; meditating daily for a short amount of time, using different techniques, reciting mantras or affirmations for a period, and doing energy work specific to the target are all great ways to show dedication and usually ensure faster healing time.

Buer is, overall, an excellent healer. That aside, he is also magnificent at reassuring practitioners of their path, inspiring practitioners to learn healing, teaching healing, and bring genuine calmness and surety to the magician.

Buer can also help one to understand morals, philosophy, and the natural world. I believe Buer to be wonderful on the topic of morals, it is clear to anyone who has worked with him a few times that he has a strong code of morals he is more than willing to share with the magician. On the topic of philosophy, simply listening can be amazing as Buer has a wealth of knowledge that could be construed as much more than our modern definition of philosophy. The natural world is both an accumulation of “philosophy” and also includes topics on how the world works (think physics), nature, and naturally occuring magick. As with many spirits, their offices highlight their personal interests, but do not encapsulate the entire spirit’s abilities.
