Let’s Talk Money Magic

So, Saturday night is coming up tomorrow (and it’s the first weekend of the month), which makes it perfect for my money manifesting rituals. Generally, I’m a bit hesitant to talk on my own rituals, because I design all the rituals I preform myself but this is pretty simple and has been helpful to me in the past. Whether it’s trying to get a new job secured, an interest in a good bonus, looking for some overtime as an hourly worker, eagerness for some extra cash to appear, or anything else, wealth rituals matter.

In truth, I didn’t hold my first true “money magic” ritual until last year, which is part of why it’s something newer (not job hunting, but money as it is, alone) in my list of rituals for hire offered. I was kind of intimidated the first time I held this type of ritual; it was the first time for this new category and I was eager to reap the rewards of it. While I do believe that desperation has (or can, at least, have) a fascinating role in magic and witchcraft, I did not go into that ritual with a real, tangible, or desperate need. I was just looking for a bit of comfort and to try out something new and different in my practice.

At this point, I’ve been practicing ritualist magick for over a decade! So, I’m rather familiar now with sitting down and having before me something I’ve never done before. It was exciting, and a tiny bit nerve-wracking as well.

It was a Saturday and I’d been in conversation with another couple practitioners about days and times (planetary correspondences) with regard to money specifically. I figured, since I wasn’t planning on inviting any spirit(s), that I needed to find a way to set the ambiance. It had been some time since I’d actually moved myself into my ritual area, affectionally called “Temple” even if it isn’t quite at the dictionary-level definition of such a place, and held a true ritual–as opposed to a quiet meditation or just energy directing–for something I wanted without a spirit present.

Ingredients

Have a look at what I brought to the first of these rituals (those in italics have been featured in later rituals):

shallow focus photography of four leaf clover
  • 2 green tea light candles
  • 1 half-size, tall green candle
  • Incense: I believe a stick of green-colored jasmine
  • Crystals/stones
    • Bigger: Kyanite, kunzite, pyrite, dragon’s blood jasper
    • Towers: Moss agate, kunzite, another
    • A selenite “wand,” a long cylinder shape with curved edges
    • A little glass jar of hematite crystals
    • A little stone, with one of those natural holes going through it
  • 2 dragon heads
    • Beautiful resin pieces I’ve custom ordered, filled with stones and the like
  • A resin “fairy door”
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Money
    • 1 larger bill, 1 medium bill
    • Coins of varying values placed atop the dollar bills
  • Tarot cards (Smith-Waite, Centennial edition)
    • 4 of Pentacles, Ace of Pentacles, 10 of Pentacles
  • A small (torn), blank thick piece of white paper and sharpies
  • A Spotify playlist!
  • My ID & debit card
  • Some items that belong to Sitri and typically reside on his altar
  • Different variations of dollar bills and coins
  • Cloves, more bay leaves, salt, water
  • A pendulum
  • Additional/different incense, rocks, crystals, and tarot cards

What you’ll find about the items I gathered and placed onto my altar, is that many are personal to me. I’m a firm believer in magic being something that comes from within. Something that circulates into the air around us and then grows with our breath into becoming what we desire (of it, of/for ourselves, etc.). I strive to make my rituals somewhere I feel comfortable, somewhere my mood suits the tone of the goal, and somewhere I feel myself. While rigid rules and regulations regarding magic and similarly called craft have a place, I prefer to go the way I feel called to before indulging in others’ carefully regulated rituals.

These ingredients will not be necessary to all successful money magick castings. Instead, you should explore the items in your own home and practice that resonate with you, your ideas of abundance, and your practice of the craft. Perhaps coins, bills, and bay leaves are important; or perhaps it’s a set of green candles and a statue of some kind that make it onto your altar. Magick is what we make of it, and pretty trinkets are never where your magick comes from–you are.

My suggestion, of the listed ingredients, would be physical currency, a candle or two, bay leaves, cloves, and something personal to you (something that represents you). However, this still isn’t something that need to be followed to the letter. The ritual described in this post is one of many, each slightly different to each other, each personalized by the inspiration of the moment. Whatever you have on hand, whatever you feel is needed, or best left out, that is what’s right for you. A clove, bay leaf, crystals…these things will not be what makes or breaks any ritual founded on personal energy and power, as this ritual is.

Ritual

Let’s get into this! So, all things appropriate scattered around the altar and dressed as one dresses for such rituals, I took my place in Temple and set about lighting candles, turning off lights, and getting the music started. I try to begin rituals, especially those without any spirits present, with a decent mediation.

Once focused, there’s a moment to pause and consider if everything is as it should be. Is the music still right? Are the candles where I want them? Does everything look like it’s somewhere it belongs? Do I feel like I’m in the right place? Etc. Making adjustment as needed for a few moments, soon everything is as it should be and ritual continues on to the next stage.

And the next stage is…meditation! There’s something great to be said for meditation. The stillness, the power that fills in the void, the voiceless echoes of energy banging around, the way you feel the swell of magic rising and becoming so “tangible.” Not all meditations are this way, but in ritual I tend to try to lead them there. When I feel myself, when I feel like power is whatever Sitri’s not-description of it is, is filling me to the brim and running freely from my fingertips and not-claws, I let the energy move through me, move me.

When we listen to music, when we become possessed, when we breathe without restriction, the body moves. So I let my body move as it likes as I breathe and listen to the music and sit quietly in temple, staring into the candles’ growing flames and watching as both physical items and non-real shadows flicker and run across the altar. And when I feel comfortable in this distortion of reality, the shift from where we usually walk, and the feeling of infinite power that drenches the mock-quiet of temple, I make my move.

A calm, steady focus on each aspect of the ritual is next. Each tarot card, each stone, each coin and dollar bill. And with each, the accumulation of their energy into the altar, into myself, into the air around me and “held” within Temple. Everything has an energy, ascribed or inherent. This time is set aside to parse out the sounds/words to the music, to breathe feeling or life or direction into this moment of time where everything is amplified. A subtle shift in gaze from the 6 of Wands to the 10 of Pentacles, a slight movement to better look upon a stone tower, or a closing of the eyes and deep breath before looking, meaningfully, importantly, to and between the feeling of what is in this moment and the debit card laid out among bay leaves, candles, and cloves.

What is ritual if not coming to terms with ourselves?

How have my rituals changed?

I’ve changed my go-to ingredients a little, and I now have a go-to sigil and a couple of incantations and/or spells to choose from when I’m in ritual. I also have made the choice to call Sitri into my wealth rituals as he was eager to participate once and now is more than welcome and appreciated.

Using Tarot

First, if you haven’t checked out Understanding Tarot, please go ahead and take a look at it. Whether you already have a working knowledge of tarot or are completely new, it’ll give some important insights into how I read.

On this post I’ll give some information on using tarot to see surroundings, the future, within the mind (emotions too), and using tarot to communicate with spirits. I feel that the most discretion should be used when seeing into the future and communicating with spirits. Hope you learn something exciting and helpful! Remember to be clear about what type of reading you want before you start shuffling your deck. If you want to mix and match, just make or find a spread that fits your needs.

To keep in mind: If you only pull one card, expect it to be the most concise version of the tale available. If you pull multiple cards, they should all be taken into consideration as parts when you are interpreting surroundings, future, and mind. Major Arcana and Court Cards have more weight than other cards, Major stand in for a or the person in question and represent overarching, powerful energies at play. Court cards have a similar quality, but to a lesser degree and may also represent other people close to or in the question at hand.

To See Surroundings

The first use of tarot I’m going to discuss is using tarot to see a querent’s surroundings. Now, I don’t mean you’ll get an image of where they are like you would remote viewing; tarot and OBE are distinct from each other. However, what you will be able to see in this type of reading is what is happening or going on around the person (you, whoever asked for the reading, or another person the reading focuses on).

You have to define what type of surroundings you want to know, if it’s mindscape then this isn’t the right section, scroll down for that. If what you’re interested in is what a person is going though, then this is the right place to be. Whatever your reason, this reading will give insights on the person’s current life and how they are interacting with it. I know how a person interacts with their surroundings isn’t simply what is going on around them, but you can’t really take the person out of the reading so of course you’ll learn that too.

When reading for surroundings, whether you’ve seen the person recently or have not in years, set aside bias and hopes for what you want to see. These will only cloud the reading. Individual cards should be taken at face value. If there is a card about conflict, take it to mean the person has conflict in their immediate surroundings. Even if the most positive card in the deck is out too, take each card for what it shows before stringing them together to read the connections they present.

In this type of readings, as with others, the relationship between the cards is what is really of importance. In reading on a person’s surroundings, these connections can show the truth of where and how a person is doing. If there are cards about travel or movement and cards that represent sadness, it can be read that recent or nearby travels will bring sadness. That’s a very basic connection to make, but these connections are what create a full picture of the environment.

An example spread: The Chariot, 7 of Wands, 2 of Wands, 3 of Cups.

It can be read that the person in question has recently had a major change of pace in life, perhaps they moved location or perhaps there was another swift change in their life that progressed them forward on their path (The Chariot). This was likely won after difficult times (7 of Wands). After this feat, a door must be walked through, there is a path extending out and the person involved must make their choice and follow through, there might be slight confusion or a tug between strong emotions (2 of Wands). Finally, the surroundings are full of joy and friendships (3 of Cups). So, it can be understood that this person is going through life-changes, but they are accompanied by good relationships.

Seeing surroundings will get you a glimpse into what a person is experiencing, but be wary of your own biases, hopes, and fears. The cards are likely to paint you a great picture, listen and read calmly and you will see it. Even if you are reading across oceans and long stretches of land, the cards can show you big pictures and details alike, interpret correctly and you can know almost anything about what someone is going through. Readings on surroundings are almost always based on the present moment. But we all know the present comes at the tail of the past, so the first card might be giving background on current surroundings. Calmness will bring you the answers.

To See the Future

This type of reading is the type that I warn most strongly against until a reader has a certain amount of experience and trust (especially in the self). Readings of the future are readings that can change your life and change your entire relationship with magick and especially divination. Provided you have enough background in tarot, divination, and magick in general, and you are a level-minded person when it comes to reading, I have some thoughts to share on reading to see the future.

My favorite way to do these readings is with a touch of channeling. Sit calmly, be still and clear your mind. Anyone who says a mind can’t be clear shouldn’t be channeling among other things in my opinion. Clear your head, breathe, put on something loud (no words) if it helps you and shuffle your deck normally. Make your intention clear. Focus on the person whose future you want to see (if it’s not you, a photo and name are always great links) and that you intend to see their future.

A couple warnings before I discuss card interpretations. I said just a moment ago this type of divination changes a person. First, that is only the case if you are an amazing reader with talent and skill or whatever you like to call it. Second, that is only the case if you read accurately. Make sure you are the type of great reader who can read accurately before pulling cards about the future because it will be a nightmare reading for you otherwise. Here are my warnings and I’ll leave it there.

  1. Be careful what you ask for, that it may present itself.
  2. Divination such as this has an uncanny way of becoming true.
  3. What you see now as a blessing may come to be a curse and vice versa.

Future readings for yourself and others can be a great way to catch a peek at what’s around the corner. Specify a timeline, or otherwise use your intuition for this during the reading. My general rule is that after a person has gotten started on the first card, or completed what it brings is when the true timeframe begins. After time, consider what type of themes you want to see into. Are you reading on the future of a career, relationship, magick path, in general? Make this clear to yourself so that the cards will reflect it.

The cards you see might make you feel, that’s okay. As long as your personal feelings aren’t overpowering any messages you receive or instincts you have about the cards, let yourself feel what comes. These cards might not be step-by-step what’s waiting for the person, but they very well could be. Keep in mind that all people faces challenges in life and this reading will likely feature a challenge, especially if the subject of the reading is involved in magick because we magicians constantly face new struggles as part of the trade.

Don’t be panicked about darker cards like the 3 of Swords, the 9 of Swords, the 10 of Swords, Death, The Devil, The Tower, or Judgment. Likewise, do not think all positive cards are going to bring dreams to fruition although they certainly may. Most important is how the cards speak to you and with one another. Major Arcana cards are typically thought to bring stronger energy and be less avoidable than Minor Arcana, but Minor Arcana cards often show the way between these bigger events, they may be subtler energies. Court cards can be taken as energy or people, use intuition.

This boils down to being open about your reading and taking the cards without judging them. Trust in yourself and your reading. Sometimes, you are going to read things that terrify you and you can’t put that back in the box. There is no way to prepare for that. Sometimes, these will be beautiful and have lovely messages. Only ask questions you’re okay hearing the answer to.

An example spread: 5 of Swords, 4 of Wands, 10 of Cups, Death, 9 of Swords.

Conflict, probably interpersonal, is upsetting but ultimately yields fruit and overall comfortable stability (5 of Swords, 4 of Wands). Stability begets emotional fulfillment and peace, contentment and positive, healthy relationships (10 of Cups). Change is forced to happen, whether internal or external there is a challenging transition or transformation that needs to happen; maybe it’s because everything is great now or maybe it’s because something is coming that demands change (Death). The time period read about ends in headaches, haunted thoughts, feeling betrayed and run through (9 of Swords).

I noted this briefly in my last tarot post, Death is extremely unlikely to signal any real literal death. Just like the Tower is unlikely to make a person fall from a building and the Sun is unlikely to land someone on the Sun. Tarot cards represent things, they aren’t usually likened to their literal names or they’d be called Oracle cards.

To See within the Mind

This is one of my favorite ways to use tarot, it gives a glimpse into your mind or the mind of another person. You will be able to see what they are feeling and experiencing mentally, decisions that are being considered, the path that they are on, and other similar things. This type of reading is often used in love readings, it is also good for understanding your chances in achieving something another person is responsible for arbitrating, and it can be used to see what is going on within your own mind and heart. Of course, there are other reasons to use this method as well.

So, to read cards with this purpose, clear your mind and relax. Make your intention clear and make clear the person whose mind you are interested in better understanding. If you’re interested in the mind of another, full names, photos, and other fetish links are always useful but not usually required. With a clear mind and a clear intention, shuffle and pull your cards.

The way that cards are read in this type of reading is less action-based and more within the mindscape. While the 10 of Pentacles may represent in another context acquiring great wealth and strong relationships, in this reading it may mean that a person feels or thinks that they have all they need before them. Similarly, the 5 of Swords or Wands can be taken as mental strife and confusion more than they should be considered cards of outward conflict. While this may play a role, the cards here are highlighting the internal and not the external.

The way cards are connected in this type of reading is also slightly different than they would be in a future reading for example. The cards are not showing that one event leads to another which leads to another, instead they are giving a general backdrop of the mind in question.

An example spread: Knight of Swords, 3 of Wands, 10 of Wands

The person in question is considering a risk; it’s unknown whether they have weighed their options well or not, another card could be pulled for clarification (Knight of Swords). The reward is likely great, but the risk comparable to it. Things are becoming clearer, but they are not yet perfected or stable (3 of Wands). The person has stepped through the gate presented by the 2 of Wands and is on their path to success, they feel this; however, there is much struggle involved (3 of Wands and 10 of Wands). There are heavy mental and/or emotional burdens to carry on this path and the person is feeling weighed down by them (10 of Wands).

The cards can be read like this because it keeps everything above action and in the mental realm. The connections made are there, but they are not as heavy-handed as other types of readings. Connections could be more present, for example a reader could conclude that the burdens of the 10 of Wands are brought by a potential risk. But, be careful in connecting cards that are separated by space (a card or more) and don’t share common themes. A reader could also say that the mental burden is coming to an end because 10 represents completion. Neither of these are wrong, but a reader must always fine tune their interpretations, connections, and language to the energy of the person in question.

To Communicate with Spirit(s)

For a long time, I brought cards to every ritual I did, it was magnificent and I learned some amazing things. Especially when clairaudience (or channeling) is available to a person, reading with spirits is incredible. They give some amazing card interpretations. They also use the cards in a slightly different way than most readers would without the presence of a spirit.

Regardless, cards are also great for people who understand tarot, but can’t quite hear Spirit(s).

With these types of readings, there’s an important decision to make pre-ritual, pre-reading, pre-invocation, pre-whatever. This decision is between using intuitive and pre-determined spread. Most of my readings are intuitive anymore, but especially for holidays I usually find a (themed) tarot spread I like, or two, and bring that to ritual with me. Nothing kills ritual vibes faster than messing around with a phone looking for the right tarot spread. If you’re deciding between a couple, hold out a pendulum if you want and ask the spirit. Otherwise, choose and be quick once ritual begins.

Other than a spread, you will need to determine how you plan on pulling the cards. Personally, unless a spirit is present and requests a different method–as King Belial has–I shuffle until a card turns over or falls. Sometimes, I say they must hit the surface I’m reading on and other times jumping out and landing on my forearms is fine as well. If this is your method don’t accept all 20 cards that come out when you shuffle poorly, that’s not the spirit, it’s you.

Some people cut the deck three times and pick the top cards. That works great for some! Whatever you choose, be confident about it and don’t change it up for trivial reasons. You are asking a spirit to guide you in this case, the spirit is relying on you doing your part to the best of your ability so that they can also do theirs. If you hear “Stop” in the middle, stop and evaluate why you were asked to. Is the spirit asking you to pick the card? Are you about to drop half the deck? Is there a fire in the living room?

Listen to the spirits.

They are here because you have asked them to be. So be courteous and listen with all your ears (or your mind) at all times. The more you practice, the more you will begin to understand that they are often leading you down your path and not against it. The same goes in these readings, no matter what subject you have asked about, you have asked and they are giving an educated opinion/suggestion on the matter. You don’t have to follow what they say, but listen well. Because in a month, maybe you will look back and see what they said has become your reality, or you might see that if you had followed their suggestion you would not have encountered so many issues.

Reading as communication with spirits looks different each and every time unless you have a well-developed method you use across the board (which is actually not my recommendation). My best suggestion is to follow your intuition and to listen. Even if something you hear or feel seems unrelated to the cards or in opposition to them, write it down and seek to understand later.

For anyone who can’t “hear” spirits yet, don’t worry too much about it. You are doing your part bringing cards to the ritual and trying your best. Replace “hear” with “feel” and you are good to go. Intuition is the seed of all clairs and mastery in magick and spirit communication. If you need it, bring the little book that comes with your cards. Remember though to always prioritize your intuition.

Understanding Tarot

Tarot Cards have been used for a very long time as divination tools. I recommend anyone interested in (learning) reading cards have at least some working knowledge on the history of tarot. It can help understand what uses cards have, how they can be used, and how reading can differ from one reader or another.

Aside from the differences between card readers, there are also many detailed differences between tarot decks. There is a tradition, for example, that Wands represent Fire and Swords represent Air. This tradition, however, is not the only one to exist. In a lovely deck titled Celtic Dragon Tarot, this order is reversed. Some believe that Golden Dawn purposefully put the cards out with the suit to element reversed; others believe this tradition is correct. Regardless, the point is that different decks have different meanings and associations that can be large and small. Read with your deck, not against it.

There are several things to keep in mind when reading cards and learning to read them: numerology, the elements, astrology, and the images of each card. For a while, reading cards might feel like grabbing something from a bag off each of these categories and then sticking them together to form a card interpretation. While you’ll certainly learn about each card, it might not be the best method. Instead, something like that offers a route toward memorization that handicaps intuition and personal connection to cards.

Although I, and many others, have certain phrases we associate with certain cards (or pairs of cards), these are not meant to stand in for a full interpretation. An example might be that when the Page of Cups and Page of Wands are together, the phrase “dark rival” comes to mind. The 5 of Cups might be linked to the word “divorce.” And likewise, the Major Arcana card, Death may call to mind “transformation.” These key words are not bad, but it’s important to understand that a card is much more than a word or phrase. Sometimes, that word may apply and sometimes it may not.

Cards must also be read in connection with one another. Aside from one-card readings, it’s important to draw connections between cards that are drawn or “pulled”. This is where most of the reading becomes either relatable for the querent, or problematic. Connecting cards can be intuitive, it can be aided by Spirit(s), or it can simply be relating aspects of a card to that of another. This is what separates good readers from outstanding readers. Good readers get caught up in card meanings and associations, outstanding readers go with the flow and listen, they tune-in to the cards, the querent’s energy, and what’s going on in their own energy to read and tell a story—the story the cards present.

Understanding tarot also comes from realizing and understanding how tarot functions as a language and as a story. The language behind tarot we’ve already discussed a bit. It can be found in the numerology, elements, astrology, and images represented on or by each card. Each of these may seem it’s own ‘language,’ but when they are put together they come to be the language of tarot. Each card carries all of these parts. Perhaps it is easiest to focus only on the symbols like pentacles and coins, or water, moon, animal. But, symbols are not the only foundation of tarot. One must also learn the meaning of the numbers to accurately depict the language on a card. 1 is newness, 5 conflict, 10 completion and so on. It’s easy to say Strength is Leo and so it’s the Sun. But what about the 4 of Cups? 4 is stability, and Cups are emotions. But that does not tell the story of the 4 of Cups. Language is important, but it is not the complete encapsulation of a card.

A deck I recommend to learn about how planetary associations are related to each card is the “Patch Tarot Deck.” It can be found as an app, online, and can also be purchased as a physical deck. This deck labels every card with astrological correspondences. (I have no affiliation with it.)

Now that we’ve touched on the importance of language, on what should be learned about the cards to understand them more fully, it’s time to talk about the place of “Story” in tarot reading. While each card tells a story, so does each suit (and the Major Arcana), and so does the deck as a whole. The easiest way to begin unravelling the story of the cards is to spend time with them.

Grab a card–any card–and look at it. See what’s going on in the picture. See how the characters are interacting, are they facing each other? Facing away (from you)? Are they involved in tasks? What expressions are they wearing? What colors are in the background? Does it look like they’re making a mistake? Are they “winning” (does it cost something)? Etc.

You can also lay out all the cards to a suit and see how the cards progress. From the Ace of Cups where a chalice overflows with positive emotion, to the 2 of Cups where two people are brought closer together, to the 3 where a harmonious family/friends scene is shown, to the contemplative 4, and the clashing out-of-balance 5, etc. See how the cards move from one to the next. (Numerology will be helpful here especially.) Look of the Major Arcana as well, watch as the cards go from the Fool to the Magician (what a transition!), to the Hanged Man, to the Tower, and to the Sun, follow the cards to Judgement and The World. What if you were a spectator walking through this world of drawings and characters? What story would you come away with? This is what the cards give to you.

So when you read, bring this knowledge with you. Start slow. Take the pressure away and sit and look at your cards. Read their language and read the story they are showing you. From one card to the next. Pick out themes that stand out in Major Arcana cards and ones that stand out between multiple cards. Make note of these. Make note of repeating numbers, astrological associations, and more. Being able to connect cards may take time, but this is what brings your reading a level up. After that, it’s about degree of understanding and intuition.

You may not understand everything in the moment, that’s okay. Bring a notebook and write things down, especially patterns! If you have any experiences like a vision or a spirit speaking, etc. you should write that down as well. Even if you just have a feeling about what a card means or could mean, put that down too. This will really help you when you look back to see how you’ve progressed, but also when you look back to see how accurate your reading was. Tarot can be used in many ways, only some of which include predictions, but accuracy comes in many forms.

Some Add-Ons

Clairaudience

Some people may call this intuition, others may call it hearing Spirit(s). The truth is, sometimes it’s one, sometimes it’s the other, and sometimes it’s both. Regardless, the following applies.

When you “hear” something during a reading, write it down! These tidbits of information can be incredibly helpful and often are useful in connecting the dots between cards. If you’re naturally good at this type of “hearing,” it may happen more often than for others. Whether you are or aren’t, taking a breath when you’re caught up in meanings or trying to draw a connection and taking a step back from the cards can help loosen your mind and allow you to “hear.” No matter if you’re doing an evocation and know who gave you the words, or alone with your deck, write down what you hear! You can dissect and analyze it later.

Clairvision

Sometimes when you’re reading you may get a “vision.” Pay attention to it. Close your eyes (unless you already have another method you prefer) and watch the vision until it ends. Just watch. When it’s over, that’s when you should write it down. Write down details before you write down the big picture as those will be the first to fade from your mind. Even if a detail is really loud and stands out, write down a word or phrase before moving on.

You may not understand something in the moment, that’s okay. Sometimes they will make much more sense later. The more you experience things like visions, the more you’ll be able to understand them in the moment and for clarity. When you read cards, bring a notebook in case of these experiences, but also simply to catalogue your readings. When you look back, it’ll be really amazing to see how you’ve progressed. Visions will likely be related to what you’re reading cards about if not the cards themselves.

While a bit morbid, I’d like to give an exaggerated example for clarity. Here’s my example spread: you pull The Moon, 7 of Swords, Death, and the 4 of Wands . You may interpret this as emotions and confusion of choosing a path lead to deception and transformation, ultimately the confusion clears and you gain stability. That’s a decent, basic interpretation. Now, if you see a vision of say, someone you know laying in a pool of blood on the grass in front of their house, that should change your interpretation. You might now interpret, The Moon brings confusion of emotions which ties into the 7 of Swords’ deception and thievery, something goes wrong and Death becomes literal death after which you find stability. This “stability” may be a literal house, it may be money, or anything else.

Visions, should you have them, should become the focus of a card set. Trust them. (This paragraph is for people experienced in visions, not people who’ve never experienced and don’t understand them.)

I’ll close by saying the Moon is an interesting, fascinating card with many interpretations. The 7 of Swords does not herald death, it’s about mischief and betrayal. Death, I have only had mean literal death twice and it was about the same human. And the 4 of Wands is generally a lovely bright card. Do not expect people to die when you pull the Death card. That’s not what it was really meant for and that’s not something that usually occurs. A reader can go a whole lifetime and never have anyone die because of that card, I’ll bet it’s common. If you ever feel scared of a card, I have 2 suggestions. The first is to Take A Break. Hide your decks away and stop reading for a period of time, something substantial to you (a month or two for example). The second is to take that card out of your deck, it’s not something I recommend and in-fact advise against because it feeds fear and restrains your potential, but your safety and well-being comes first.

So, a long section, but something that should be addressed with visions. They are not all sunshine and flowers, and so I thought we should talk about a darker aspect. I don’t think it’s addressed enough honestly.

Understanding a deck, or tarot at large, is a skill that comes before using tarot. They can be learned side-by-side, but be cautious of becoming too reliant on the “white book” so to speak. Next in Tarot will be how it can be used!

Knowing Before Death Knocks

Have you ever known when someone was going to die?

Have you ever known when someone was going to die? Maybe you watched them run by in a dream and they didn’t stop when you called out. Maybe you saw visions of skeletons crawling from their graves one night. Maybe a demon whispered it to your heart?

Maybe they were sick and you were just waiting for the moments to catch up and for their body to still. Maybe they knew it too, in their hearts if not their minds and did their best to hide the truth from saddening you, even when you knew it too? So have you ever known that someone would die?

Did you do everything you could to keep it from happening? Have you spent money like it’s never-ending? Have you turned to magick in desperation?

Have you ever had it not matter?

I’ll be the first to say that my answer is yes. In the last two years, four people I care about have passed. I have known before it happened each of those four times. And truthfully, I’ve come here to find calmness. I’m not here preaching today, I’m just here to say that sometimes this burden isn’t one I bear with joy.

So today I’ll be sharing these four stories. If you’re new to magick, you’ll learn as you deepen your practice that the future is rarely unforeseeable, and for those of you who understand that magick is life and life is magick, maybe you’ll resonate with what I have to say. Maybe we can help even each other with this.

My Great-Grandmother

Death of a Bird: Death of a Loved One

Channeled

My great grandmother’s name was Mami Luci, at least to me it was. She was an indigenous Peruvian woman who sang Quechua songs with the man she spent most of her life with. In summer of 2020 she passed on.

One day I came across a dead bird, a little sparrow with it’s beak pried open still and coldness hardening it’s dead body. I looked at it and knew; it told of death to come. Not mine, but of another. Not wanting to believe this I sat and typed into google ‘dead bird meaning’ or something similar. Of course it said a close person’s life was coming to an end and of course it said some other flowery things like ‘reconnect with yourself’ and other nonsense about death and cleaning chakras.

But it didn’t matter. Some spirit had whispered to me, “Death of a bird: Death of a loved one.” A phrase that I still remember and cannot let go. I knew when I saw it what was coming. And I denied it. As I would expect most people to. This was the first sign I noticed.

The second was a dream. I won’t share many details but there was a spirit there with me and another young girl with him. I called after but she wouldn’t come back. She had to leave. I called after the spirit too, I yelled his name, calling, “Ronowe,” but he wouldn’t stop leaving. I’d only worked with him once before and when I woke up I was confused about his presence in my dream. But it seems nothing is without reason.

The next morning my mom told me my great-grandmother had passed away over night. Later I researched Ronve (Ronove/Ronwe/Ronowe). I came across a page–though there are quite a few– detailing Ronve’s intersection with the dead. He “harvests” their souls. In an instant I understood. He crosses people from this realm to the next; the dream made sense as my heart sank. I never asked to know when people would die. I never asked for warnings or signs or demons visiting my dreams with departing souls.

In truth, I was a bit spooked but also marveled at my magick. I was sad and mourned and gave thanks for the dream.

& The Love of her Life

Months later I was laying in bed in the dark, talking on the phone when I saw a graveyard setting like a vision. Skeletons seemed to creep out from their tombs, nothing too graphic but I saw it clearly. Bones and skulls and fully-formed skeletons. I was concerned someone might die. The next night, it continued.

My family was told of his illness but not of his passing. It was a week later we found out from an online obituary. The visions lasted three days. He died on one of them.

It was the second time I had seen images of death and had death directly follow. I didn’t know how–other than a bit scared–to feel. I didn’t know what would happen next time, if I would also receive a message of foreboding. I wasn’t sure I wanted to.

My King of Wands

Wherever your soul may rest, let it be at peace.

You were a lovely man whose soul I love and have loved.
A kind man with a vicious attitude, someone willing
To lay himself aside
For those he prided himself on knowing.
I wish you the courage to return and be with me if you may,
To move on if you must. I wish you the love
That too early left you stranded in this life, the kindness
That too often went unoffered here.
You were the strength I sought and failed to find in others:
Merciless to those ill-fated against your will.
Darkness deeply rooted in desire
Hell cast upon those opposing, you walked through
Blood and torment
With you sugar sweet name, your warrior’s spirit.

King of Wands, Celtic Dragon Tarot

My King of Wands died over summer (2021). I was devastated and angry. The cards had told me loudest of all. I feel I should have seen it coming sooner than I did, I blame myself for not telling him something–anything–that could have kept him out of danger.

Because that’s really where a lot of us are headed. Knowing people are going to die and blaming ourselves when they do. I’m not sure I’ve ever been so shaken with anger and sadness; I should have known sooner and then maybe he would still be here talking about taking me out to eat fish at the beach. I wonder if he would talk about all the ways he made his money to get me to squirm, or be silent about it in fear of my judgement. As if I didn’t know what kind of person he was.

The cards showed me a reversed King of Wands long before the day he died, they showed me the Death card, and more. I thought nothing extreme of it. They had first showed me the pictured King of Wands when I began working with him–be wary of your ego that it may beget pain.

But later, he wouldn’t respond. Something was wrong. I pulled cards, again and again in the way we’re not supposed to where you pull one card at a time several (like 10+) times in a row trying to make the cards tell you what you want to hear. And then I did it again, and again. He was sick, hurt, and I couldn’t make it stop.

So I turned to ritual. Buer, Furcalor. Buer the Healing God who has helped cure ails in the past. And Furcalor: God of those Drowned who came forward as a protector and friend of my King of Wands long before. And I was promised healing. And so he healed. But then, after he was made all better…something else came up and he died there in the hospital where they refused him treatment. That night I was working, I pulled the death card. I pulled the Prince of Coins (pictured with a butterfly in that deck). To me, butterflies are representations of death. I pulled cards that mean gone. I pulled the King of Wands reversed.

Hours later, the message came through that they had killed him. And I went home and cried. I hated having known. How could anyone have bragged before about knowing when the time of others came to an end? How could I hand this back and say to the world, “This is no gift. Thank you, but please keep it. It only hurts and I don’t want it.” For months, the only magick I did was to light a candle on the one month mark of his passing.

His Grandfather, My Hierophant

Who shared my heritage and taught our old ways as if they were new and spoke of them with great pride.

If we can know when others will leave this life, then it stands to reason that we may know when we, ourselves, will pass on. Even that we can sway this date. It is a long-standing belief among certain magickal communities that when one has great power, until the date chosen a person’s life cannot be taken.

He called up all his friends and family, all his favorite people and loved ones within a couple days to talk like old friends… and then his breathing stopped. In Latin America, “depresión” is often both something physical and mental. When his grandson who he’d raised from childhood passed, everything changed. Perhaps it was more the heartbreak that led him to death.

They say he knew because that day they began talking and then realized that he had called them all as if he was fine, planning on living a while longer. I only wish we could have talked about the customs of our ancestors in candlelit rooms at the break of dawn, that we could have spoken of tarot as though it were more than cards and a language, that we could have made potions together and laughed at the meaning of herbs in the humid air. I wish too that I had been able to tell him I love him, have him understand.

I will miss you. I hope you come again sometime, if you may.

The week before he passed on, I had another dream of death. It was out of the usual and I woke up wondering who had died. After three deaths I recognized the dream. I got a call, and half asleep I confessed to the phone, pillow, and my mind all at once that I was scared someone’s life was coming to a close.

I dreamt of a home I had never seen, of faces I didn’t recognize. Everything was colored a shade of green as though someone had plastered leaves into old film to get the color to show. Decapitated heads floated in one scene, but this was not the point. Moments later a man laid on a bed; and down from thin air a woman appeared and said to him, “I have come, my love, to take you home.” Though I have never met the woman he created life with, I would believe if not her it was another beloved woman of his past. He took her hand and they departed in this way.

Four days (which isn’t a whole week I know) later, I read cards about the old man. Dead. Dying otherwise. I read them like I’d read his grandson’s. With desperation and fear and anger and frustration. I called Buer and we spoke. He promised me healing but said also, “Those who can be healed must be willing to heal.” He spoke too of “those who hold their pain too close to heart.” I knew overnight that he was passing on, then that he had passed. Buer stayed with me much of that night and I am grateful for it. His chilling cold presence at my back grounded me, reminded me that death is the natural order of life on Earth.

It was when I formally heard the news of his death that I understood. He did not want to live. Not that I could have, but it would have been cruel to bind him here. I’m still grieving. And I never did get to ask him why he practiced the ways of our people, or how he dealt with knowing when death came, where he learned to listen to the wind from. Are these inevitable?

Knowing Before Death Knocks.

If you’ve ever known and want to share, go ahead and leave a comment. As I said, this was a story post. I’ll make another on the broader idea of Death & Magick later on, hopefully it can help at least someone other than me handle the knowing, the waiting, and the ultimate deaths that come as a result of life.
